Tom Barker, MS, LCHMCA graduated with a Master of Science in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a previous Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications/Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill.
In practice, Tom focuses on co-creating a space in which clients feel heard and comfortable working on themselves. This is intended to stand in opposition to the many forces in society that discourage listening and ferment chaos in our lives. It is important to me to facilitate a sense of authenticity, humor, non-judgement, and collaboration.
Tom works with college students, adults, and adolescents. He is particularly interested in working with persons with physical disabilities/chronic illness. His therapeutic style draws from Person-Centered, Adlerian, ACT, DBT, CBT, and Narrative theories. Tom is experienced working with depression/anxiety, trauma, career concerns, relationship issues, grief/loss, cultural concerns, and adjustment disorders.
In his free time, Tom enjoys watching movies, spending time with friends, playing guitar and hiking.
